Goals and assists
busy opening period saw the sides locked in at two each after 20 minutes in Milton Keynes. The Lightning for the first goal in the league of the evening through David Norris 2:30 into the game, while Luke Pither brought the Panthers level at 7:07. Justin Kovacs was the beneficiary of a poor turnover by the Lightning on their offensive blueline to race through 1-on-0 and score at 14:17 to give the visitors the lead. However, MK were back on level terms with seven seconds left in the period as Robbie Baillargeon slapped the puck home on the powerplay after some good set up play.
The game remained tied for almost ten minutes in period two, that was until a battle along the boards produced the puck for Brett Perlini to fire home from close range at 29:12.
With the Panthers ahead after 40 minutes the Lightning staged another comeback to draw level again – this time with the puck behind the net, a combination of Michael Fine and Tim Wallace somehow managed to sneak it past Michael Garnett to make the score 3-3 at 44:49.
There were no goals for the remainder of the period, nor in overtime, which meant the game was decided in a shootout. Six rounds were needed as Tim Wallace scored both of his attempts for the Lightning, and as only Alex Guptill netted for the Panthers it meant MK took the extra point.
