Goals and assists
It seems odd to say ‘a tight 4-1 win’, but that’s exactly what this game was at the Skydome between teams trying to end the weekend positively.
Coventry, denied in two straight games in Belfast, welcomed a Fife team who had won in Milton Keynes the night before. The game was played at an excellent pace with chances throughout – no goals in the opening period came, despite the teams combining to hit the posts some five times in the opening 20 minutes.
The middle session also brought no shortage of chances, but again ended scoreless. Indeed, it took until 42:49 for the deadlock to finally be broken, Ben Lake pouncing on a loose puck behind the net and then wrapping-around past Shane Owen and give Coventry the lead. A smart high, blocker side finish from Dillon Lawrence made it 2-0 at 46:31 to put the Blaze in command, before a Nicolai Bryhnisveen slapshot just under two minutes later extended the lead to three on the powerplay.
Fife got themselves on the board with just under six minutes to go through Marcus Basara as he shot high across Matt Hackett, but it was to be the Blaze’s night as Shawn Pauly finished on the empty net with 1:24 left. Both goalies deservedly got man of the match in a game that ended with a three-goal difference, but for large parts had very little between the sides.
