A five-goal second period helped the Fife Flyers to a derby victory over the Dundee Stars on Tayside on Monday night. The game was played in front of a crowd of 200 spectators due to Scottish COVID-19 restrictions.
The Stars, who were beaten 7-1 in Belfast in their first game out of COVID-19 protocol, had a couple of good chances to open the scoring - the better of them both fell to Connor Sills but he failed to hit the target on each occasion. The home side eventually went ahead with 30 seconds left in the period as the Flyers got caught on a bad change, allowing Charlie combs to set up Dillon Lawrence for the one-time finish.
Fife hit straight back with Brandon Magee's first goal for the team 29 seconds into period two at what was to be the start of a goal rush for the visitors. Philippe Sanche bundled the puck over Shane Owen's goal line at 22:#1 to give the stars the lead back on a goal that was video review, but that was to be the final time the hosts would lead. Jacob Benson tied things up with a powerplay goal at 25:15 to start a goal rush for the Flyers, with Greg Chase getting on a loose puck just under three minutes later.
Benson made it 4-2 at 36:32 before James Anderson poked home Bari McKenzie's pass 18 seconds later to put the Flyers three ahead after two periods.
Dundee tried to find a way back into the game in the third but face a wall in Shane Owen when they did manage to carve out some scoring opportunities. Kyle Haas' thunderous slapshot pulled the score back to 5-3 with 51 seconds left, but Chase found the empty net with 15 seconds remaining on the clock to round off a 6-3 win for Fife.
