Goals came at a premium in this contest between ZSC Lions Zurich and the Sheffield Steelers as the Swiss would go on to snap the British side's win streak when Rudolfs Balcers netted both of his attempts in the shootout to help his team to a 2-1 victory.
Zurich's powerplay made its first appearance late in the period and to great success as Balcers broke the ice to give his club the lead at 16:44. Marlon Graf gained possession along the left wing side before feeding a pass to Mikko Lehtonen who slid it to Balcers who rifled it past Matthew Greenfield.
After 20 minutes, both sides were tied with 12 shots on net while Zurich held on to their one-goal advantage.
In the second, the Swiss and Brits continued to play back-and-forth hockey but 12 minutes in, it was Daniel Leavens giving Sheffield some life when he found the net for his fourth of the campaign. A quick transition play up ice gave Mikko Juusola time to thread a pass to Leavens between two defenders as Leavens picked his spot and beat Šimon Hrubec to even things at one goal apiece.
It was an uneventful frame for Zurich who managed just two shots on net during that span as Sheffield dictated the pace of the play en route to securing the equaliser.
The third period got underway with the narrative shifting a bit as Greenfield faced heavy pressure from the hosts. Fortunately, the American netminder was up to the task, denying several quality chances for the Swiss to keep the score even.
Both backstops continued to put on a goaltending clinic during the final stages of the match leaving the hosts and visitors deadlocked at one each following regulation and OT, setting the stage for a shootout and Balcers to play hero as the Swiss survived to claim their fourth win.
