A short summary of Friday’s DEL games

14 Jan 2012 | Dennis Mende

On Friday five of the seven games ended with a home win - four of them with an embarassing end of the guest teams. The biggest surprise once more came from bottom club Nürnberg Ice Tigers while the Kölner Haie were able to stop their negative trend.

Straubing Tigers - ERC Ingolstadt 6:2

The Straubing Tigers once more showed their strength at home by crushing ERC Ingolstadt. Decisive for the game was that Ingolstadt simply overslept the beginning of the first two period. In the first one Sebastian Osterloh and Karl Stewart could get the home side a two-goal lead within five minutes after the start of the game. The middle period started even worse for the guests as Matt Hussey, Carsen Germyn and Bruno St. Jacques could increase Straubing's lead to 5-0 after only 27 minutes. In the last period Jared Ross and Rick Girard made the result a bit more comfortable for Ingolstadt but it was René Röthke who did the 6-2 final score for the hosts.

Nürnberg Ice Tigers - Eisbären Berlin 6:2

After their bad start into the season the Nürnberg Ice Tigers have become a feared opponent during the last weeks. The bottom club did get a point in all its last four games prior to the match against league leaders Eisbären Berlin. Nürnberg made it clear immediately that they wouldn't give the Polar Bears any presents. Against an extremly disappointing gues team the Ice Tigers  get a two time lead in the first period due to power play goals by Shane Joseph and James Pollock. The equalizer in the middle of the period had come from Barry Tallackson. The middle period became the decisive factor where the team from the German capital was simply overrun by its opponent. 15 to 2 shots in favour of Nürnberg were the result of many Berlin penalties. The balance of power on the ice did also reflect on the video board. Yan Stastny scored a hat trick for the hosts in the middle period - two of the three goals in the power play to give the Bavarians a 5-1 lead after two periods. At the beginning of the last 20 minutes Vitalij Aab made the result even more embarassing for the European Trophy winner of 2010. Berlin darling of the public Sven Felski, who played game number 900 in the DEL, did score for the 6-2 final result but couldn't be too happy due to the loss of his team. For Nürnberg there is now a real chance to reach the DEL pre-playoffs.

Kölner Haie - EHC München 4:0

Cologne had a negative trend during the last weeks. Now they had to play at home where they are on of the weakest teams in the whole DEL this season, and in addition to that the visitors were EHC Münche, a team which can not be described as the Sharks favourite opponent. In a close game the Sharks were rewarded for their patience. In the first period Felix Schütz opened the score for the hosts after almost 17 minutes. After a goalless middle period it was Jason Jaspers whose power play goal brought more safety into the efforts of Cologne. Alexander Weiß and again Jason Jaspers made the final score of 4-0 and the shutout for Sharks goalie Youri Ziffzer perfect.

Augsburger Panther - Adler Mannheim 4:3 SO

In an even game Mannheim could only cut the distance to league leader Berlin to three points as the Eagles lost with 3:4 in the shootout. Ken Megowan opened the score for the guests after only 17 seconds. This lead stoof for a long time until Augsburg scored the equalizer 18 seconds prior to the end of the period when Mario Valery-Trabucco used a power play opportunity. In the middle period Mannheim was the driving force on the ice but could not score more than the second lead by Michael Glumac. On the other side Chad Bassen and Brian Roloff turned the game around completely in two of only five shots on goal of their team in this period. In the middle of the last 20 minutes Ken Megowan tied the game again for Mannheim. As nothing happened during the rest of the period and also the over time passed goalless the shootout had to bring the winner. Here Chad Bassen and Sean O'Connor secured the extra point for Augsburg.

Krefeld Pinguine - Hamburg Freezers 2:4

Krefeld received the Hamburg Freezers in their home arena KönigPalast. The hosts didn't really find into the game against the favourites from the north of the country. Aleksander Polaczek and Jerome Flaake brought Hamburg a two-goal lead after the first period. In the middle period it was Rob Collins who even increased this lead to three. Two goals by Slovenian international Rok Ticar late in the second and at the beginning of the third period brought hope back to Krefeld but when Jerome Flaake scored his second goal in the 46th minute the game was over.

Hannover Scorpions - Iserlohn Roosters 1:3

In a direct duel between two teams fighting for pre-playoff spots the Hannover Scorpions had to play against the Iserlohn Roosters. While Hannover is a solid team in away games, sucess at home is rarely there at the moment. Despite opening the game through Marvin Krüger in the first period this shouldn't change against Iserlohn. At the begin of the middle period the Roosters did not even need three and a half minutes to change the result to 1-3. Lasse Kopitz and two times Michael Wolf had scored for the guests. In the last 20 minutes the result didn't change anymore so that Hannover now is last in the DEL table.

Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg - DEG Metro Stars 7:1

In Wolfsburg the DEG Metro Stars had a complete off-day. After the hosts lead through Norm Milley after 16 minutes, the middle period should become a disaster for the guests from Düsseldorf. Christoph Höhenleitner, John Laliberte, Patrick Pohl and Kai Hospelt decided the game early. In the last 20 minutes the horror did continue for the Metro Stars as they had to let trough another two goals by David Laliberté and Andre Huebscher. Simon Danner could only deny Wolfsburg goalie Dshunussow another shutout.
