DEL league leaders stumble over Cologne

The Kölner Haie still can hope to make the playoffs after winning against the league's leaders in regular time. Mannheim and Ingolstadt with favourite wins, while bottom club Hannover crushes their neighbours in the table Nürnberg away.
Kölner Haie - Eisbären Berlin 2:1Is there still hope left for Cologne to make the playoffs? After their extremely surprising three-point win against league leaders Eisbären Berlin they are four points behind the last pre-playoff spot. In a close game Haie goalie Danny aus den Birken made the difference with 37 saves and only allowed one goal by André Rankel who tied the game in power play with ten minutes left to play. A few minutes before former Eisbären player Alexander Weiß had opened the score for Cologne - also in power play. Unlike in the previous weeks Cologne was not shocked by the late equalizer and instead Charlie Stephens scored the game-winner just a minute after the 1-1.
Adler Mannheim - Hamburg Freezers 7:2The Eagles from Mannheim had no problems to crush the Hamburg Freezers and to get as close as to three points behind the co-leaders of the DEL - Eisbären Berlin and ERC Ingolstadt. 45 to 16 shots on goal are a clear indicator of what happend on the ice. Despite an early Hamburg lead by Thomas Oppenheimer, three goals within two minutes by Christoph Ullmann, Yannic Seidenberg and Frank Mauer turned the game around completely. In the second it was again Oppenheimer who scored for Hamburg but this was the last time the Freezers should have a positive experience in this match. Only 54 seconds later Michael Glumca did get the two-goal lead back to the hosts, which was increased by Yannic Seidenberg with his second at the end of the period. In the third Yannick Lehoux and again Frank Mauer made the result more than clear.
ERC Ingolstadt - Augsburger Panthers 5:3Ingolstadt used a home win over their Bavarian neighbours from Augsburg to level the points of first-placed Eisbären Berlin while the guests failed to improve their position in the playoff fight. In the 7th minute Thomas Greilinger opened the score for the hosts in a period where Ingolstadt was clearly better, but early in the second John Zeiler tied the game in a delayed penalty. Only at the end of the middle period Ingolstadt found a way to transform their dominance in goals and two times Jared Ross did get his team a two-goal lead. In the very last second of the period it was Christian Chartier who cut the lead to just one. In the third Ingolstadt already believed to have deicded the match when Kris Sparre put the puck into the net but half a minute later Sergio Somma let everything become open again. In the end it was again Sparre who made the final 5-3 with an empty-netter.
Nürnberg Ice Tigers - Hannover Scorpions 3:7 Hannover showed in the match between the two bottom clubs of the league against Nürnberg that they still can win after only having one win in the last 14 games and they did this by scoring seven goals in just one game - the same amount of goals they had in their last five matches alltogeher. Nürnberg had a perfect start with a goal in the first minute by Vitalij Aab but then the nightmare started for the Bavarians. Gerrit Fauser, Ryan Maki, Eric Regan and Tommi Hannus made it 4-1 for the guests until the "half time" of the game. Although Yasin Ehliz cut the lead with one and a half minutes left to play in the second, even before the second break Sascha Goc made it 2-5. Eric Chouinard let the Ice Tigers fans hope again with his goal early in the third but Eric Regan with his second of the night and Jeff Hoggan made the embarassing loss for Nürnberg even worse.
