Lots of goals and tension in DEL

All 14 teams played in the highest German ice hockey league today. Most clubs kept their chances open till the last second.
League leaders Kölner Haie opened their derby weekend - on Sunday they'll receive the Düsseldorfer EG - with a nice race to catch up in Krefeld in the "small Rhine derby" against the Penguins. Krefeld had the better start and went in front through super star Christian Ehrhoff already at 8:47. At the begin of the middle period Daniel Pietta even doubled the home lead before Alexander Weiß found a fast reaction for the guests. A shorthander by Martin Schymainski at 43:32 made Krefeld look like a deserved derby winner but Köln came back through Felix Schütz and Philip Gogulla. With 62 seconds left in overtime Charlie Stephens even won the extra point for the Sharks who were accompanied by 600-700 fans.
In a direct duel of two chasing teams Adler Mannheim beat Augsburger Panther 4-1. At the begin of the second period the Goc brothers Marcel (with an assist) and Nikolai (with the goal) brought the home side in front. Mirko Höfflin and Yanick Lehoux made it 3-0 before Tobias Draxinger scored the consolidation goal for Augsburg. Marcus Kink still gained the three-goal lead back for Mannheim.
But not only Augsburg stumbled today. Also Ingolstadt had to give up points. Against EHC Red Bull München they had a lead three times but at 59:04 Martin Hitnerstocker earned the last-minute equalizer for the 4-4. In the fifth round of the shootout Klaus Kathan won the extra point for München in the Bavarian derby who had to show a reaction after a terrible 2-6 defeat in Hannover earlier this week.
In Straubing the lockout players Claude Giroux (2 assists) and Daniel Brière (1 assist) again had a good night but couldn't avoid a loss of their team against hard-fighting Tigers. Berlin tied a 0-2 and 2-3 deficit but Blaine Down scored the late game winner for Straubing at 56:12. In the last minute of play Laurent Meunier even added an empty netter for the 5-3.
In Hamburg two teams with high ambitions met. The local Freezers won the match against the guests Nürnberg Ice Tigers but had to give up a point when Connor James tied the match with just 3 (!!!) seconds left in regulation. Thomas Oppenheimer twice scored in the shootout to give Hamburg the extra point.
Not even 10 minutes were played and the Iserlohn Roosters were already in front with 2-0 through goals by Mark Bell and Jeff Giuliano. Guests Hannover Scorpions never found a way into the match and even received the third goal by Collin Danielsmeier who scored into the empty net in the last minute of play.
Bottom side Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg lay 0-1 behind in Düsseldorf but five consecutive goals pathed the way for their important away win against the Düsseldorfer EG. Justin Bostrom only could make it 2-5 in the last period.
