CSKA missed their chance of signing Detroit Red Wings star Pavel Dastyuk for the 2014/15 KHL season, CSKA Moscow's GM said today.
Former NHL star and now the General Manager of CSKA Moscow, Sergei Fedorov, sat down with Datsyuk just a few days before the Russian star inked a three-year extension with the Wings.
"Unfortunately for us, Pavel Datsyuk extended the contract with the Red Wings. We had the chance to bring him here in a year's time, but as a person who knows what the NHL is about, I perfectly understand his decision", said Sergei Fedorov. Datsyuk claimed he wanted to grow as a player, and staying in the NHL would be the best decision.
Datsyuk has been with the Red Wings since 2001, when he won the Stanley Cup in his rookie season. He is currently on a seven-year $46,9 million contract and his extension will come in power as off the end of next season.
So far he has scored 255 goals and added 512 assists in 779 NHL appeareances lifting the Stanley Cup twice (2002,2008). Datsyuk will most likely be a key member of the Russian hockey team at next year's Winter Olympics in Sochi.
