The National Ice Sports Championship in Naltar Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, has concluded with an impressive display of talent and enthusiasm for winter sports. This prestigious event, featuring competitions such as ice hockey, speed skating, curling, figure skating, and relay races, brought together 12 teams from across Pakistan, including seven male teams and five female teams.

Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts emerged as the standout performer, securing a total of 12 medals: three gold, five silver, and four bronze. Among their victories, the Gilgit-Baltistan Winter Sports Association (GBWSA) claimed the women’s ice hockey championship, while GB Scouts triumphed in the men’s category. GB Scouts also dominated in speed skating, figure skating, and the men’s relay race, while GBWSA excelled in the women’s relay race and speed skating.

Naltar Valley, nestled in the Karakoram Range at an altitude of 10,500 feet, served as the perfect backdrop for the championship. Known for its snow-clad peaks and serene lakes, the valley has long been a hub for winter sports, thanks to its status as Pakistan’s oldest ski resort.

The annual ice sports competitions, jointly organized by the PAF, National Winter Sports Association, and GBWSA, highlight the region's growing reputation as a winter sports destination.

Following the championship, the seven-day Winter Fest commenced in Murtazabad, Hunza, further amplifying the region’s festive spirit. Organized by the Gilgit-Baltistan government in collaboration with GBWSA, the event features a variety of snow sports competitions and cultural activities, drawing participants and tourists alike.

The Winter Fest is part of a broader initiative by the GB government to promote winter tourism, develop local talent, and provide entertainment for residents. According to Zamir Abbas, Secretary of GB Tourism and Culture, these events significantly boost the local economy and attract tourists to the region. Many competitions are organized on a self-help basis, showcasing the dedication and passion of local communities.

The success of the National Ice Sports Championship and the ongoing Winter Fest underline the potential of winter sports to thrive in Pakistan. By fostering local talent and showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Gilgit-Baltistan, these events not only promote tourism but also position the region as a hub for international winter sports in the future.

As the closing ceremony in Naltar celebrated the achievements of all participants, the spirit of competition and camaraderie continues to thrive in the snow-capped landscapes of Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a promising chapter for Pakistan’s winter sports.
