New club want to take back top hockey in Kharkiv
The new club from Kharkiv that will compete in next
Ukranian Professional Hockey League (PHL) was presented yeasterday. The board decided to choose the historic name Dynamo Kharkiv, a club founded in 1979 and competing in Soviet League during the '80s.
Mykhail Dobkin, the Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration will be the Honorary President while the Vice President will be Kharkiv Mayor Gennady Kernes. Last year Kharkiv had a team in PHL, the
Kharkivs’ki Akuly Kharkiv, finished 6th in the regular season missing the playoffs. The team folded after the end of season, but many players from Kharkivs’ki Akuly, including the coach
Dmitri Yakushin, are now in the Dynamo roster.
"This is a really great event. After many years the hockey club "Dynamo" revived in Kharkiv. The purpose of the professional hockey club "Dynamo Kharkiv" estabilished in 2012 is to continue the story of such a strong team that was famous for its traditions and victories "- said Sports Manager Olexandr Grynshupun - "our goal in this first season is to reach the playoffs."
According to the coach Dmitri Yakushin the team is completed by 70%. The backbone of the team are Ukranian players, including forward
Evgeny Pastukh, drafted in 1998 by St. Louis, back in native Kharkiv after many years.
