2.Bundesliga clubs ready to build own league under DEL
On 18.July the 2.Bundesliga clubs will have their meetings, and now a major topic of discussion is going to be their own version of "big bang" by separating themselves from 2.Bundesliga and the ESBG/DEB all together. As reported by us (
see our news), the current 2.Bundesliga Champions Landshut Cannibals were denied their licence while Oberliga Champion Tölzer Löwen Bad Tölz were denied promotion and now asked to find 225,000 Euro in order to gain promotion. This has now started off the rumblings of clubs wishing to remove themselves from the control of the DEB and set up their own league, named the DEL 2, in which they would be under the umbrella of the current DEL.
Ernst Rupp, the manager of Heilbronner Falken gave an interview with stimme.de and openly talked about the current situation. During the interview, Rupp has admitted that almost all the top clubs are willing to make the jump, right now, it appears only Riessersee, Kaufbeuren and perhaps Rosenheim are unsure about the whole thing. The clubs have said if certain clubs dont wish to join them, that both the recreated Kassel Huskies and Löwen Frankfurt would be the clubs to replace them. According to Rupp, the clubs have asked the current DEL if they would be willing to accommodate them, the answer was yes, and perhaps, in the talks that the two leagues will bring back the relegation/promotion. The Oberliga however, would remain in the hands of the ESBG.
This would be a huge shake-up for German ice hockey, whether you believe it would be for the good or bad for German ice hockey, this will be a interesting battle between the clubs and the DEB in the following weeks.
