High-scoring day in DEL

High-scoring day in DEL

50 goals were scored in 7 games on Friday. Especially two away teams had impressive performances.

League leaders Kölner Haie received their second loss this week. Against the Straubing Tigers they were behind already at 03:18 through Daniel Sparre. A power play goal by team captain John Tripp brought Cologne back in the second period but at 49:36 Tyler Beechey was there with a shorthanded goal for the away win by the Bavarians.

Second placed Adler Mannheim couldn't use that new setback for Cologne as they lost themselves in Iserlohn. Jeff Giuliano, Marvin Tepper and Michael Wolf gained a comfortable three-goal lead for the underdogs in the first 20 minutes that they defended well. When Christoph Ullmann made it 3-1 with a power play strike at 51:40 tension came back until again Michael Wolf decided the match with his empty netter at 58:46. Shortly after that Matthias Plachta added another one for Mannheim but they couldn't force overtime anymore. Iserlohn jumped to the sixth spot in the DEL table.

A team that took an advantage out of these failure was ERC Ingolstadt. The Bavarians beat the Krefeld Pinguine at home. In an even match Ingolstad scored two early goals through Patrick Hager and Jared Ross but had to see how the guests came back in the second period through Boris Blank and Francois Méthot. With the begin of the third period Timothy Hambly scored the game winner for Ingolstadt.

Last-placed Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg had a nice start with a 2-0 and 3-2 lead against DEL record champions Eisbären Berlin but six (!) consecutive strikes let Berlin go away with an easy win in the end. Especially the first line of the Polar Bears did an amazing job. André Rankel (3 goals, 2 assists), Daniel Brière (1 goal, 4 assists) and Claude Giroux (1 goal, 3 assists) all had a great night and participated in 5 of the 8 goals Berlin scored in their 8-3 away win.

The Panthers from Augsburg had no chance to show their home strength against another ambitious team, the Hamburg Freezers. Already at 24:41 they were down 1-4 before Robet Brown let them hope again. Still the guests from Northern Germany continued with three consecutive goals to win by the score of 2-7.

In the game between the Hannover Scorpions and Nürnberg Ice Tigers the fans could enjoy 11 goals with a constand up and down for both sides. Hannover was in front twice and Nürnberg even three times in regulation before Ivan Ciernik completed his hat trick at 64:19 to let the Scorpions gain the extra point in the last minute of overtime.

A late comeback let Düsseldorf celebrate a shootout win against Red Bull München. With one of their first shots on goal Andreas Martinsen brought the DEG in front at 02:17 but München turned the game around until the second intermission with a double by Mike Kompon (one shorthanded, one in power play). When Manuel Strodel answered for Düsseldorf at 54:38 the game was open again. In the shootout three of the four attempts by the DEG were succesful while München could only score twice so that the extra point stayed in the West of Germany.
