Elitserien changes name to SHL

Sweden's top league will be called SHL from the 2013/2014 season.
Today it was announced that Sweden's top league Elitserien will change name to SHL. SHL is shot for Svenska Hockeyligan in Swedish or Swedish Hockey League in English.
The name is changed after 36 years. There are a few different reasons for the change. The league wants to have a unique name in Sweden as many other top leagues in other Swedish sports are called Elitserien. Another reason is to make the name more international. The third reason is to make the name more clear as both Elitserien and Svenska Hockeyligan has been used for different purposes before.
"This change gives us the opportunity start using and investing on the trademark more on long-term than we have done earlier", the managing director of the league Jörgen Lindgren said about the new name and trademark for the league.
